SOUTH — MISSISSIPPI / OCTOBER 20 ANNOUNCEMENT

Barge plans more than $8.3 million in new sawmill capacity

Barge Forest Products is expanding its Macon, Mississippi, sawmill with an investment exceeding US$8.3 million. The October 20 state announcement describes a new building and production line with optimized edging and twin horizontal resaw capabilities. Completion is expected in October 2027.

Barge specializes in southern yellow pine lumber, including longer lengths for construction. Mississippi Development Authority says the project is intended to improve efficiency and increase annual capacity. Barge’s executive vice president of operations, Jason Ebert, also identifies improved log recovery as an objective. The announcement provides no quantified production or recovery target.

State assistance includes a loan guarantee program and the Mississippi Flexible Tax Incentive program, known as MFLEX, with additional support from Noxubee County. The release does not state the value of that assistance.

FBS perspective: Recovery and capacity require different scorecards: lumber recovered per unit of log input, and contribution earned from additional saleable output. Extra machine hours or boards alone can reward an improvement that merely moves inventory to the next constrained step. A production-line investment earns its return when better recovery or throughput reaches a paying customer; evaluating both measures helps distinguish those routes to a return.

U.S. MARKETS — OCTOBER 20 CENSUS RELEASE

September housing estimates show weaker starts and single-family permits

The Census Bureau and HUD estimated September housing starts at a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 1.221 million, 5.2% below revised August. Single-family starts were estimated at 859,000, down 4.6%. These are annualized rates, not the number of homes begun during September.

Both reported starts declines have 90% confidence intervals that include zero, so the survey cannot establish that the actual monthly changes differed from zero. The figures are preliminary and subject to revision.

The permits series puts single-family authorizations at an annual rate of 845,000, down 4.0% from August. Regional single-family permits fell 6.9% in the Midwest and 4.4% in the South; the West was unchanged. Total permits, including multifamily buildings, slipped 0.2% to 1.400 million. The dated report supplies the regional tables and explanatory notes.

NORTHEAST — MASSACHUSETTS / OCTOBER 20 ANNOUNCEMENT

Södra brings pulp and lumber sales closer to U.S. customers

Sweden’s Södra is establishing a commercial sales office near Boston to serve U.S. pulp and sawn-timber customers. Its October 20 announcement also identifies a logistics partnership as part of the investment, without naming the partner or specifying an investment amount.

Martin Chovan, sales director at Södra Cell, will oversee the office. The company describes the move as a way to work more closely with customers, understand their requirements and improve market access. Södra is owned by more than 50,000 family forest owners and already exports internationally. This announcement concerns an expanded commercial presence; it does not announce U.S. manufacturing capacity.

WEST — NORTHWEST MARKET DATA / OCTOBER 20 RELEASE

Forest Service updates its long-run industry data resource

The Pacific Northwest Research Station lists an October 20 release of Production, Prices, Employment, and Trade in Northwest Forest Industries: 1958–2025. Its public page brings together lumber and plywood production, harvest, employment and trade series, with free Excel and CSV downloads.

The table dates are essential to interpreting the resource. Several production tables run through 2024 and were updated October 14; statewide forest-products employment extends through 2025. Other series have earlier endpoints, including selected wholesale-price tables ending in 2019. The page’s new release date does not make every series a current market quote.

The directory identifies coverage and update dates table by table and links a separate timber cut-and-sold dashboard with downloadable data. It provides a historical base for regional market analysis, with differing periods and units clearly identified.
