What matters this morning

  • A new open-access Arkansas study maps where additional primary wood-processing capacity could make the most sense. About 11% of the state rated highly suitable; the model identified 12 medium and nine large softwood-mill locations and 32 medium and 20 large hardwood-mill locations.
  • Mercer Peace River began a planned 10-day maintenance shutdown September 7. The outage is expected to remove roughly 15,000 air-dried metric tonnes of pulp production and bring 475-500 contractors and specialized trades into the mill.
  • Enstructure has completed its acquisition of LOGISTEC's marine-services division, creating a 106-terminal network across 30 U.S. states and Canadian provinces. The acquired system includes major forest-products handling operations in Baltimore, Albany, Burns Harbor, Sainte-Catherine and elsewhere.
  • Late Monday reporting adds useful detail to the Forest Service research reorganization: Ely and Grand Rapids, Minnesota will remain open, while Prairie du Chien and Wisconsin Rapids, Wisconsin are still slated to close.

Identifying Optimal Locations for Primary Wood Processing Mills and their Potential Support in New Job Creation in Arkansas

Journal of Forestry · September 7, 2026 · Arkansas / mill siting, timber supply and hauling economics

Subedi, Godar Chhetri, Pelkki and Boston combine GIS-based multi-criteria analysis with location-allocation modeling to identify candidate mill sites using road and rail access, electric transmission, labor, markets, slope, flood constraints, existing mills and surplus forest growth. About 11% of Arkansas was classified as highly suitable, concentrated mainly in the Ozark Highlands and Mississippi Alluvial Plain.

The model selected 12 medium and nine large softwood-processing locations and 32 medium and 20 large hardwood-processing locations. The paper is unusually practical because it explicitly combines resource surplus with hauling distance and infrastructure instead of treating mill development as a simple timber-volume exercise.

Wildfire and fuel treatment effects on carbon

U.S. Forest Service Pacific Northwest Research Station · 2026 · California, Oregon and Washington

This new chapter in PNW-GTR-1044 synthesizes field and simulation research on carbon stocks under fire exclusion, natural disturbance, wildfire and fuel-reduction treatments, including the role of harvested wood products. For managers, its value is that it puts treatment effects and no-action scenarios into the same framework rather than discussing carbon independently from disturbance risk.

Pulp, Paper & Biomass

Alberta

Mercer Peace River enters 10-day outage; 15,000 ADMT of production comes off line

Mercer Peace River's planned maintenance shutdown runs September 7-17. Work centers on digester inspection and repair, pulp-machine optimization and recovery-boiler inspection; Mercer expects the outage to reduce production by about 15,000 air-dried metric tonnes.

The shutdown also has a sizable local-services component: Mercer says 475 to 500 contractors and specialized trades will be on site. The mill produces both NBSK and NBHK pulp and holds rights under two 20-year Forest Management Agreements plus three deciduous timber allocations, so the outage briefly affects both pulp output and regional wood flow.

North America — Ports & Logistics

Enstructure closes LOGISTEC acquisition, building a 106-terminal network

Enstructure completed its acquisition of LOGISTEC's marine-services division September 2; trade coverage resurfaced the deal Monday as the combined system began operating. The network now spans 106 terminals in 30 states and provinces, more than 3,000 waterfront acres, roughly 12.5 million square feet of industrial warehousing and about 70 million tons of annual cargo.

This matters directly to forest products. LOGISTEC's Baltimore operations handle paper for major forest-products companies in more than one million square feet of paper-grade warehousing, while other acquired terminals such as Albany, Burns Harbor and Sainte-Catherine explicitly handle forest products. Enstructure's pre-existing Houston and Savannah terminals also handle lumber and forest-products cargo, so the acquisition consolidates a meaningful piece of North American breakbulk forest-products logistics under one operator.

Lake States — Research Infrastructure

Grand Rapids and Ely research facilities survive Forest Service review

Late September 7 reporting confirms that Forest Service research facilities in Ely and Grand Rapids, Minnesota will remain open, along with St. Paul and retained sites in Wisconsin and Michigan's Upper Peninsula. Prairie du Chien and Wisconsin Rapids, Wisconsin remain on the closure list.

The Grand Rapids office is especially relevant operationally: it has produced long-running work on peatlands, water, red pine and ecological forestry. This is a material refinement to the broader research-facility closure story reported last week because it identifies which Lake States field capacity is actually being retained.

Market Opportunities

Equipment & Industrial Wood

Two niche wood-industry auctions run today

American Lumber & Pallet's live auction calendar shows a September 8 online/phone heavy-equipment sale that includes sawmill and forestry equipment, plus a separate absolute auction of bulk #1-grade notched pallet stringers through WoodRing. The stringer sale carries no minimums or reserves.

Neither is a broad market indicator, but both are useful real-time windows into secondary equipment and industrial-wood liquidity — exactly the kind of small, scattered market activity that rarely reaches conventional forest-products news feeds.

Opportunities worth watching

  • The Arkansas mill-siting paper is worth testing against actual announced projects. Its candidate locations provide a benchmark for whether new capacity is following surplus fibre and transport economics or other incentives.
  • Enstructure's enlarged port network could matter to imported paper, lumber and other breakbulk forest products if terminal practices, rates or warehousing are standardized across the combined company.
  • Mercer Peace River is scheduled to restart after September 17. Watch the restart and procurement cadence rather than treating the 15,000-tonne outage as a structural supply reduction.

Special Opportunity

A few spots remain in the next Forest Business School Essentials cohort

The Forest Business School's six-month Essentials program begins October 7, 2026. The program is free to accepted participants through partner funding and is built for mid-career working-landscape professionals and small business owners in forestry, logging, wood products, land management, and related fields who want to improve how they work, lead, and run their organizations. Nearly weekly one-hour evening video sessions combine assigned reading/listening with peer discussion and practical application — no grades, papers, or busywork.
