NORTHEAST — PENNSYLVANIA / BID DAY

1,207 MBF of Union County state-forest timber reaches bid opening today

Pennsylvania DCNR lists sale 07-2026BC01 in Hartley Township, Union County, for bid opening today. The sale contains 1,207.1 MBF, led by chestnut oak and dead chestnut oak, with red maple and mixed oak also represented.

For hardwood buyers and logging contractors, the immediate signal is the combination of volume and mortality: this is a sizeable state sale with a meaningful dead-oak component moving to market now.

WEST — MONTANA / UPCOMING TIMBER SALES

Montana stacks three state timber bid openings over the next 11 days

Montana DNRC lists Stryker for October 6, Luke Mountain 2 Salvage for October 8 and Case for Potomac for October 13. The sequence gives western contractors and buyers a concentrated near-term run of state timber opportunities.

CANADA — SASKATCHEWAN / SAWMILL CAPACITY

Big River is two weeks from losing 250 MMBF of active sawmill capacity

Carrier Forest Products is scheduled to indefinitely curtail production at its Big River, Saskatchewan sawmill on October 16. The mill has annual capacity of about 250 million board feet, and the curtailment is expected to affect roughly 117 employees.

Carrier has cited weak lumber markets, cross-border financing pressure and reduced timber availability following 2025 wildfires. Limited activity is expected to continue through January 2027, and the company has not characterized the move as a permanent closure.

WEST — OREGON / SMALL-DIAMETER WOOD

New analysis puts a $105 million regional-output figure on an eastern Oregon mass-timber pathway

A new Forest Service-listed study models small-diameter ponderosa and lodgepole pine from restoration treatments across the Malheur, Umatilla and Wallowa-Whitman national forests as feedstock for mass-timber production.

Under the study's 20-year base case, the modeled supply chain supports 365 total jobs and $105 million in regional economic output, with each dollar invested in processing generating another 31 cents in regional activity. The study also finds 69% of the forested landscape exceeds fire-resilient desired conditions and identifies 31% as potential mechanical-treatment units.

NATIONAL — FOREST DATA / OPERATIONS

LANDFIRE's hidden role in operational planning gets a new dependency map

A Forest Service Research article published October 1 traces the data dependencies behind LANDFIRE, the national vegetation and disturbance mapping system used across wildfire and natural-resource planning.

For contractors, consultants and forest managers who rely on mapped fuels, vegetation or disturbance layers, the practical point is that many planning tools sit on top of a much larger data chain. Understanding that chain matters when datasets are updated, delayed or interpreted outside their intended scale.
