By the numbers
U.S. on-highway diesel: $6.382/gal for September 28, down 14.7 cents from one week earlier. EIA

Madison's Lumber Prices Index: $505/MBF for the week ending September 25, down 2% from the prior week.
SOUTH — TEXAS / TRANSPORTATION
Texas emergency order changes fuel and vehicle-weight rules for timber haulers
Texas has issued temporary emergency waivers affecting fuel-use and vehicle-weight rules for vehicles hauling timber, fuel and agricultural products. The changes are intended to improve freight flexibility during the current diesel disruption.
Operators should review the official order for the precise conditions and limits. The governor has separately requested federal relief from additional diesel requirements, which remains subject to federal action.
WEST — MONTANA / GNA TIMBER SALE
Montana's Cutaway Deck sale reaches bid opening today
Montana DNRC lists the Good Neighbor Authority Cutaway Deck SYU timber sale for bid opening today. The sale is on the Beaverhead-Deerlodge National Forest and offers roughly 1,189 tons of cut sawlogs.
The GNA structure matters beyond the sale itself: Montana notes that revenue from federal-land timber sold through the program is reinvested in future forest-management and restoration work.
NORTHEAST — PENNSYLVANIA / SALVAGE TIMBER
Spongy-moth salvage sale closes this morning in Bald Eagle State Forest
Pennsylvania's Camo Troubadour sale in White Deer Township, Union County, reaches its bid deadline today. The current solicitation covers about 154 acres and includes roughly 284 MBF of dead red oak plus red maple and mixed-oak material.
The sale is part of a salvage response to recent spongy-moth defoliation and mortality, with treatments designed to encourage regeneration and reduce hazardous trees along Spruce Run Road.
LAKE STATES — WISCONSIN / WORKING FOREST
$1.6 million easement would keep nearly 1,800 acres in private ownership and timber production
Wisconsin DNR is moving toward a conservation easement on nearly 1,800 acres in Langlade County. The proposed $1.6 million deal would permanently block development while leaving the land in private ownership and allowing continued forest management and timber production.
Nearly 1,500 acres would also be opened for public recreation. For the forest economy, the notable feature is the structure: conservation funding is being used to keep a sizeable privately owned property intact without removing it from the working timber base.
Under the Radar
MIDWEST — MISSOURI / CONTRACT WORK
Timber-stand-improvement contract closes this afternoon
Missouri Department of Conservation solicitation MDC 0000000265SL seeks timber stand improvement work on Castor River Conservation Area Tract 315. The current bid notice covers a 44-acre treatment area and closes today.
The contract is an example of paid forestry work sitting outside traditional timber-sale channels: stand-improvement work is being purchased as a service through the state procurement system.
