What matters this morning
- Pennsylvania has two sizable state-forest timber sales opening September 23: 680.6 MBF in Elk County and 1,298.2 MBF in Huntingdon County, both with substantial mixed-hardwood components.
- A Forest Pro surplus and consignment sale in Scottsville, Virginia put logging equipment, specialty trucks and heavy equipment into the secondary market yesterday—a useful window into equipment availability and capital recycling in the Southeast.
- RYAM’s remaining Témiscaming, Quebec production is scheduled to suspend September 15, affecting roughly 400-plus jobs and removing paperboard and high-yield pulp output for an indefinite period.
- Canada’s Global Buyers Mission wrapped up in Whistler after bringing Canadian wood-product manufacturers together with hundreds of international buyers and specifiers.
- CAL FIRE’s Fuels Treatment Effectiveness Reporting Dashboard was updated September 12, giving practitioners a current map-based way to examine how completed treatments performed when fires reached them.
Market Opportunities
Pennsylvania — State Timber
Two September 23 sales put nearly 2 MMBF of hardwood timber on the calendar
Pennsylvania DCNR lists two state-forest sales for September 23: 680.6 MBF at Dents Run in Elk County, led by red maple, red oak and sugar maple, and 1,298.2 MBF at Leading Ridge Road in Huntingdon County, led by red oak. Both also include mixed-hardwood pulp components.
The pair offers a useful northern Appalachian read because the sales differ in geography and species mix but close on the same day. Bid depth and premiums should help separate broad hardwood demand from local procurement conditions.
Under the Radar
Virginia — Logging Equipment
Forest Pro sale puts trucks and logging equipment into the secondary market
Watts Auction Realty & Appraisals held a Forest Pro Surplus Liquidation & Consignment auction September 12 in Scottsville, Virginia. The catalog included logging equipment, heavy equipment, specialty trucks, vehicles and support machinery, with 42 commercial-truck lots and a large heavy-equipment component shown in the online catalog.
Why it matters: used-equipment supply is part of logging capacity. Large regional sales can matter to contractors trying to add capacity without taking on new-machine pricing, and they also provide a place to watch what types of assets are being released back into the market.
Pulp, Paper & Biomass
Quebec — Pulp & Paper
Témiscaming shutdown arrives Monday
RYAM’s remaining production at Témiscaming is scheduled to suspend September 15 for an indefinite period. Local reporting says roughly 425 jobs are affected; the operating complex primarily produces paperboard and high-yield pulp after the high-purity cellulose plant was previously idled.
The immediate forest-sector question is wood flow. A prolonged outage removes a major industrial consumer from western Quebec and adds pressure to find alternate destinations for fibre while governments and the company continue discussions over assistance, markets and a possible restart.
Government / Funding / Trade
Canada — Value-Added Wood Products
Whistler buyers mission keeps export diversification in focus
The 23rd Global Buyers Mission concluded September 12 in Whistler. Canada’s Trade Commissioner Service describes the event as a business-development venue for Canadian wood-product manufacturers, drawing more than 600 international delegates annually and pairing exporters with buyers, specifiers and market advisers.
BC Wood says prior editions have generated more than $34 million in new business. At a time when tariff exposure is reshaping Canadian forest-products strategy, the practical value is direct access to non-U.S. customers rather than another policy discussion about diversification.
New Publications, Data & Tools
CAL FIRE refreshes treatment-effectiveness dashboard
CAL FIRE’s Fuels Treatment Effectiveness Reporting Dashboard was updated September 12. The system combines an overview dashboard with incident-level mapping that shows where fires intersected prior vegetation treatments and how those treatments affected fire behavior and suppression.
For foresters and land managers, the value is post-treatment feedback: the tool can be used to compare treatment type, location and subsequent fire interaction rather than treating acreage completed as the only performance measure.
Opportunities worth watching
- Watch Pennsylvania’s September 23 hardwood results for bidder depth and price spread between Elk and Huntingdon counties.
- The duration of Témiscaming’s shutdown will determine whether the issue remains a temporary fibre-displacement problem or becomes a structural change in western Quebec procurement.
- Used logging-equipment auctions deserve more systematic tracking; they can reveal contractor downsizing, fleet replacement and low-cost capacity opportunities earlier than conventional industry news.
