What matters this morning

  • Ontario announced more than C$17.3 million across four northern forest-sector projects that could add more than 500,000 tonnes/year of forest-biomass demand while improving sawmill economics.
  • Rayonier Advanced Materials plans to halt nearly all remaining production at its Témiscaming, Quebec, complex September 15 for an indefinite period, affecting roughly 400 unionized workers plus contractors, transportation firms and forestry businesses.
  • North Carolina Railroad will invest up to $600,000 in on-site rail infrastructure for Great Southern Wood-NC’s planned $40 million lumber-treatment facility in Scotland County.
  • U.S. hardwood lumber and veneer exports to India totaled $6.944 million in the first half of 2026, a small but potentially useful diversification market.

GreenFirst Chapleau sawline and planer are ramping up

GreenFirst says its new sawline and high-speed planer have been installed and are in the process of ramping up. Ontario says the production-line investment is expected to improve productivity by about 24%; GreenFirst says the work should improve lumber recovery and value. This is operating capacity coming online now, not a multi-year concept project.

Interfor Elk Lake biomass energy system targets a 27% production increase

The C$9.6-million-plus provincial contribution supports an energy-system modernization intended to materially increase sawmill throughput while sharply reducing natural-gas exposure. The combination of higher lumber output and an internal biomass sink is notable because it strengthens both sides of mill economics: production and residual utilization.

Great Southern Wood adds rail-backed treating capacity

North Carolina Railroad will invest up to $600,000 in on-site rail infrastructure for Great Southern Wood-NC’s planned $40 million lumber-treatment facility at the Laurinburg-Maxton Airport in Scotland County. The plant is expected to create more than 40 jobs and become Great Southern Wood’s 17th treating facility. The rail plan calls for at least 421 railcar shipments annually by 2030.

Markets & Pricing

North America

Canadian Forest Service weekly price page updated September 2

NRCan’s lumber, pulp and panel price page remains one of the cleaner free sources for following North American eastern and western SPF, panel prices, monthly pulp prices and relevant exchange rates. CME September lumber was around $563/MBF Wednesday morning, with November around $559.50 and January 2027 around $582.50, leaving a relatively shallow contango rather than a strong scarcity signal.

J.D. Irving posts September 2 gatewood prices

JDI’s producer-price page was current as of September 2 and included mill-by-mill gatewood prices and trucking zones for New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, PEI and northern/southern Maine. It also notes premium pricing and bonuses may be available to private producers entering supply contracts.

U.S. Hardwood

India remains a small but real diversification market

U.S. hardwood lumber and veneer exports to India totaled $6.944 million in the first half of 2026, including $6.428 million of lumber and $516,000 of veneer, according to USDA data cited by the American Hardwood Export Council. White oak and red oak are among the leading species.

Témiscaming’s remaining production is scheduled to stop September 15

Rayonier Advanced Materials plans to halt nearly all remaining production at its Témiscaming complex for an indefinite period. Current reporting puts the remaining capacity at roughly 180,000 tonnes/year of paperboard and 290,000 tonnes/year of high-yield pulp, about 60,000 tonnes of which is internally consumed in paperboard production. The near-term question for wood suppliers is what portion of the mill’s fibre procurement disappears and whether inventories or contracts are redirected elsewhere.

Northern biomass demand could become large enough to alter low-grade economics

Ontario says four newly funded projects together could generate more than 500,000 tonnes/year of biomass demand. That figure includes both operating improvements and projects still at feasibility stage, so it should not yet be treated as committed consumption. But if even a substantial fraction materializes, procurement radius, hauling economics and competition for mill residuals and underused fibre around Chapleau, Elk Lake and Calstock could change materially.

GATES: University of Georgia Trucking Cost Estimation System

USDA Forest Service / University of Georgia · August 12, 2026

This spreadsheet-based tool estimates timber transportation costs in the U.S. South for a specific truck/trailer and haul route. Inputs can be varied to test routes, payloads and operating costs; outputs break the result into haul and component costs. For procurement radius and delivered-wood sensitivity work, it is a practical model rather than an academic exercise.

NRUM Wood Movement Factsheets

USDA Forest Service Research & Development · updated January 28, 2026

This interactive TPO-based tool generates state-level roundwood-flow factsheets showing retained volume plus interstate and international imports/exports by product. It is useful for identifying who actually supplies a state and where its roundwood leaves.

Woodland Pulp contests roughly $794,000 in OSHA penalties

The penalties stem from the toxic-gas incident at the Woodland Pulp mill in Baileyville that killed two workers. The immediate issue is safety and legal rather than production capacity, but the size and location make it worth tracking for any operating or capital consequences at one of Maine’s major pulpwood outlets.

Opportunities worth watching

  • Northern Ontario low-grade fibre: track GreenFirst’s torrefied-pellet feasibility work and the actual buildout and ramp of the Elk Lake biomass system. The advertised 500,000-tonne combined demand is large enough to matter if it converts from modeled potential to procurement.
  • Témiscaming displaced fibre and contractors: the September 15 shutdown could strand pulpwood, chips, trucking capacity and forestry contractors across western Quebec and northeastern Ontario.
  • Keep GATES in the toolbox. The USDA/UGA trucking-cost workbook is exactly the sort of practitioner information product that often gets missed by conventional industry news.
